Our Story

BioBloom was born from our passion for the environment and an incredible opportunity with John and Linda Ballis of Spiegel Energy. We first connected while working at the Yarram Yarram Landcare Network, and our mutual desire to see genuine, long-lasting ecological regeneration in our region sparked an idea. Together, we realised that BioBloom could be a game-changer in sequestering carbon, restoring soil, and inspiring our community to adopt more sustainable methods of living.

Our life took a significant turn in 2019 when we left our home near Byron Bay in New South Wales amid devastating bushfires. We packed our stuff and our beloved animals, including our Berkshire cross, Piggy Smalls (aka the Notorious P.I.G.), into our ute and headed about as far South as we could go on the mainland, ending up in South East Gippsland in Ben's Mum's Granny flat. Witnessing the destruction of the 2019 bushfires firsthand fueled our commitment to protecting and restoring the environment. We ended up settling outside Yarram on a small piece of land that’s now our home and the heart of BioBloom operations—proof that through challenges, there’s always a chance to rebuild better, stronger, and more sustainable.

Together, we’re a dynamic team: when one of us has a blind spot, the other steps in with care and usually a few expletives. We share one brain, a fierce love for each other, and a burning desire to help save the world—one scoop of biochar at a time.
